DIEP Breast Reconstruction

This operation uses abdominal tissue to reconstruct the breast after mastectomy. This is achieved using microsurgical techniques and offers a very natural reconstruction without the need for implants.

A 59 year old lady who had a right mastectomy by the Breast Surgeon and immediate DIEP reconstruction by Mr Floyd. She then had a nipple reconstruction. The post-op picture was taken 2 years after the main procedure.

A 47 year old lady who had a left mastectomy by the Breast Surgeon and immediate DIEP reconstruction by Mr Floyd. 6 months later she had an uplift on the right and a nipple reconstruction, then had both nipples tattooed for symmetry. The second picture was taken 18 months after the diep.

A 58 year old lady had a right mastectomy by the Breast Surgeon and an immediate DIEP reconstruction by David Floyd. She then had a nipple reconstruction 6 months later. The second image was taken at 1 year.

Immediate DIEP – what you need to know

Length of surgery 6-8 hours (including mastectomy)
Anaesthesia General anaesthetic
In-patient stay 4-7 days, and only performed in a fully equipped hospital facility
Frequent Complications Bruising, swelling, numbness
Infrequent Complications Infection, delayed wound healing, bleeding(haematoma), flap failure, fat necrosis
Recovery 7-10 days before socialising with friends and family
8-12 weeks off work
1st dressing at 1 week
driving 4 weeks
return to the gym 6 weeks
travel abroad 8 weeks
Follow-up as required but usually, 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months
