LD Based Breast Reconstruction

This operation uses a flap of skin and muscle taken from the back to replace the skin of the nipple which is removed in the mastectomy. For the larger breast, an implant is needed to create adequate volume and the muscle is used to cover the implant and hold it in place.

A 54 yr old had a right skin sparing mastectomy and immediate LD and implant reconstruction by Mr Floyd. She then had a nipple reconstruction and areolar tattooing 6 months later. The post-op picture shows the result at 3 years.

A 42 yr old patient required a left mastectomy and had a reconstruction by David Floyd using the LD flap and an implant. She then required a nipple reconstruction and tattooing. The post-op picture was taken at 1 year.

This 48 year old patient of David Floyd had a left skin sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using an LD flap and implant. She then had a nipple reconstruction and decided not to have areolar tattooing. The post-op picture was taken at 2 years.

This 40 year old lady had a right mastectomy by the breast surgeon and a reconstruction by David Floyd using the LD flap from the back. 3 months later she had a nipple reconstruction, lipofilling to the right side and an uplift on the left. The second image was taken at 2 years.

This 48 yr old required a right mastectomy and had an immediate reconstruction using the LD flap without an implant by Mr Floyd. She then had nipple reconstruction and tattooing. The final image was taken 14 months after surgery.

This fit 72 yr old had a left mastectomy and reconstruction using the LD flap by David Floyd. 6 months later she had a right reduction, left nipple reconstruction and lipofilling. The final image was taken 2 year post-op.

Immediate LD based reconstruction – what you need to know

Length of surgery 3-5 hours (including mastectomy)
Anaesthesia General anaesthetic
In-patient stay 4-7 nights and always in a fully equipped hospital
Frequent Complications Bruising, swelling, numbness, seroma
Infrequent Complications Infection, delayed wound healing, bleeding(haematoma), poor scarring, capsular contracture
Recovery 7-10 days before socialising with friends and family
8-12 weeks off work
1st dressing at 1 week
driving 4-6 weeks
return to the gym 6 weeks
travel abroad 8 weeks
Follow-up as required but usually: 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months
