Hand Surgery

The hands are vital to us for many elements of daily life. Illness or injury can be very debilitating and therefore prompt and accurate treatment is crucial to allow return to normal activity. As a member of BSSH David teaches regularly in hand surgery techniques and is an expert in the management of hand trauma, dupuytrens disease and tendon injury.

Hand surgery – what you need to know

Length of surgery 1-2 hours
Anaesthesia General anaesthetic
Overnight or day case Daycase and always performed in a hospital operating theatre
Frequent Complications Bruising, swelling, stiffness, temporary numbness
Infrequent Complications Infection, delayed wound healing, permanent numbness
Recovery 1-3 days before socialising with friends and family
7-10 days off work
1st dressing at 1 week
driving 2-4 weeks
return to the gym 6 weeks
travel abroad 3 weeks
Follow-up 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months
